Meet Guillaume Barathon, one of the co-founder of Morphée

The personal experience that inspired Morphée's creation

In the UK, around 1 in every 3 people suffer from a sleeping condition known as insomnia. Insomnia is a condition whereby people regularly struggle to sleep, whether that’s getting to sleep or staying asleep during the night. There are many signs that you might be suffering from insomnia, some of the most common signs include lying awake at night, waking up early and struggling to fall asleep again, feeling tired and irritable during the day and many more.

The most common causes of insomnia in the UK and globally include lifestyle choices such as your diet, environmental factors like the amount of light in your room and mental health conditions such as stress and anxiety. To find out how Morphée, our sleep-aid device can help with insomnia, keep on reading.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you came up with the idea for Morphée?

Guillaume: Sure, my name is Guillaume Barathon and I'm one of the co-founders of Morphée. The idea for Morphée actually came from my own struggles with sleep. About ten years ago, I was having a really hard time sleeping and it was really impacting my wellbeing. I was constantly tired and stressed, and just didn't feel like myself.

That sounds really tough. What did you do to try and improve your sleep?

Guillaume: Well, at the time I started practicing meditation, and I saw a real improvement in my sleep almost immediately. I was falling asleep more easily and staying asleep longer, and just generally feeling more rested and relaxed. That experience really stuck with me and got me thinking about how we could help other people struggling with sleep.

And that's how Morphée was born?

Guillaume: Exactly. When I met my co-founder Charlie in 2016, we decided to create a device that could help people fall asleep more easily and have a restful night's sleep, without relying on screens or waves. That's how Morphée came to be. We're really proud of what we've created and the impact it's had on people's lives.

Insomnia can be a really tough condition to deal with. Can you tell us about your own experience with it?

Guillaume: Absolutely. I struggled with insomnia for a long time, and it really had a major impact on my life. I wasn't getting enough sleep, and the sleep that I did get wasn't very restful. I was constantly tired and irritable, and it was really affecting my physical and mental health. I tried a lot of different things over the years. I tried creating a really quiet and peaceful sleep environment, but even that didn't do the trick. I would lay in bed for hours, unable to fall asleep.

That sounds really difficult. What did you eventually find that helped?

Guillaume: What really made a difference for me was practicing meditation. I started incorporating it into my daily routine, and I noticed a significant improvement in my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. It was like a switch had been flipped—suddenly, I was able to fall asleep quickly and sleep deeply throughout the night. That experience really inspired me to create Morphée, and help other people struggling with sleep to find relief.

Why did you decide to create a screen-free product like Morphée?

Guillaume: There were a few different factors that led us to create Morphée a 100% disconnected device. One of the main things we noticed is that a lot of people have the habit of using their smartphones or other devices to help them fall asleep, but that can actually be counterproductive. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt our body's natural sleep cycles, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

We also wanted to create a product that would be easy and intuitive to use, without any complicated settings or programming. By making Morphée a screen-free device, we were able to keep it simple and accessible for everyone.

Finally, we wanted to create a product that would be truly restful and rejuvenating for the user. By eliminating any potential distractions or interruptions from waves or screens, we were able to create a device that provides a truly restful and calming experience.

How important is sleep to our overall wellbeing?

Guillaume: Sleep is absolutely essential for our wellbeing—it's THE key factor in maintaining good physical and mental health. When we sleep well, our bodies are able to perform many vital functions, including repairing and rejuvenating cells, regulating hormone levels, and strengthening our immune system.

Sleep is also essential for our cognitive and emotional wellbeing. When we don't get enough sleep, we can experience a range of negative effects, including difficulty concentrating, impaired memory and decision-making skills, and increased risk of depression and anxiety.

On the other hand, when we get enough high-quality sleep, we can experience a range of positive benefits, including improved attention, behaviour, and memory, as well as better mental and physical health overall. So, it's absolutely crucial that we prioritize good sleep habits and make sure we're getting enough restful sleep every night.

What are your top recommendations for overcoming insomnia and other sleep difficulties?

Guillaume: My top recommendation is to create a calm and technology-free environment in your bedroom, by removing your smartphone and other screens from the room. This will help you relax and fall asleep more easily.

I also suggest avoiding stimulating foods and drinks, like coffee and sugar, after 4pm, as they can interfere with sleep. And, I highly recommend trying meditation to help clear your mind and achieve a more restful sleep. With our Morphée, we offer over 210 guided meditation sessions to help you relax and fall asleep peacefully.

Could you share some of your other top tips for sleeping well?

Guillaume: Sure, I recommend creating a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom with light-coloured walls, comfortable furniture, and a temperature between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius. And of course, keeping your Morphée device on your bedside table can also be helpful for falling asleep.
